Ralph Lauren - Double RL (RRL)

The Ralph Lauren Company is made up of a variety of brands, the first was Polo launched in 1967. Other brands include the Purple Label, Black Label, Ralph Lauren Golf and many more. The moust sought after Ralph Lauren brand on eBay is the Double RL brand (RRL). The clothing line for males only is mostly western wear and very rugged. It is inspired by Ralph's massive ranch in Telluride, CO.

RRL is only sold in RRL stores and select high end Ralph Lauren boutiques. The prices are very high so this is not an item you will find very easily, but I have had some luck especially recently as shown by my recent RRL completed auctions. Spent about $60.00 total on these items, not a bad profit as I made back my original investment with the sale of 1 pair of jeans. (click on the pictures for a larger view)

Something to be aware of if you find a pair of RRL jeans. A lot of the jeans are meant to look worn and distressed. So if you find a pair with holes or even dirt spots on it they were probably meant to be that way. So don't pass them up because you think they are damaged, trust me they will sell.

Vineyard Vines Polo Shirts are great sellers on eBay. They are easy to spot because of the bright pink tag on the inside collar and the whale logo on the chest area. Here is one of my recent completed auctions.



Check out the sell-through rate from Terapeak for 90 days of USED Vineyard Vines Polo Shirts.

Over 82%, that's amazing. And at an avg. price of $22.52 you know you are making a nice profit when you find one because it shouldn't cost more than $4.99 for one at a thrift store.

Get Those Ugly Christmas Sweaters Ready

I write about this every year, so start planning now if you want to make some extra money for the Holidays. The best way to make money on eBay during Christmas time is to know what the hot products will be for shoppers. It is usually a few new items every year. In 2008 it was the Nintendo Wii or the Snuggie Blanket. In 2009 it was the Zhu Zhu Pets. But there is one item that is searched for year after year on eBay and that is Ugly Christmas Sweaters.

The term ugly Christmas sweater is always one of the most popular on search engines during the Holiday season. Likewise those searches will lead people to eBay, to find the tackiest sweaters out there. Colorful green and red sweaters with Christmas themes like snowmen, reindeer and elf's will bring in top dollar on eBay. Why are these items so hot?

The main reason people buy these sweaters is to wear them to Holiday office parties. A lot of companies give prizes to the employee who shows up in the ugliest Christmas sweater.

So now is the time to look for them at thrift stores and gargae sales. Or even make them yourself. The uglier the better. Just find some gently used sweaters (cardigans are popular at thrift stores and red or green would be perfect) and add christmas items to the sweater. The sweaters that typically do the best have ornaments hanging off them, or light up. If you are creative and have the time you can make some good money. It's best to start listing these in November because Holiday parties can start in early December and if you wait longer then list them as Buy It Now.

Not bad, but as you can see from this screen shot from Terapeak there is a lot more money to be made if you happen to be lucky enough to find the right Lefton Mermaids.

Now you won't become a Titanium Level Powerseller by listing one of these shirts, but it fits my goal of at least a $10.00 profit after all fees. Look at that sell through rate of 91.53%, that is as good as it gets.

Vintage Oakland Raiders / L.A. Kings Starter Hats & Jackets

I was watching a rerun of Married With Children this morning on TBS and Bud's character takes on the role of Grand Master B. He was wearing his Oakland Raiders Starter Jacket & Black Raiders snap back hat. As an eBay seller I was thinking to myself I wish I had those items to sell on eBay right now. Raiders & L.A. Kings gear which became popular with the rap group NWA in the late 80s (who always wore the black and silver colors of those sports teams) are excellent sellers on eBay.

Plus a lot of sellers add these keywords to other teams starter hats or jacket auctions to get more views because they know people are searching for these items. So that average price and sell through rate would be higher for these items.

So keep an eye out for these items at garage sales, thrift stores, etc.

Thrift Store Find of the Month March 2011

OK, I am back to posting my top Thrift Store Find for each Month at the end of the month. This month was a very successful month with 3 finds with at least a $115.00 net profit. The top sale for the month was: Purchased for $10.00

Sold for $325.00

Net profit: $287.56

Vintage Ralph Lauren colorful items are huge sellers on eBay. head over to Terapeak and run a search for lauren 1992 and look at some of the sales. $1,000+ for some sweaters and jackets. Anything with the Polo teddy bear on it are good sellers as as well. So keep an eye out for unique RL items.

I had a great couple of days of thrifting last week after a long break. One of my better finds and coolest was this Vintage 1985 Teddy Ruxpin Bear and along with some accessories still sealed. Everybody remembers "Hi! My name is Teddy Ruxpin. Can you and I be friends?" All items came to a little under $17.00. I listed them as a lot last night starting at $149.99 and already have a bid.

Thrift Store Item 2 Sell - Nike Blue Tag Vintage T-Shirts

I have said it many times before on here. Do not skip the t-shirt section at the thrift store. There are many treasures to be had in the .50-$2.00 range. See the end of this post for my best t-shirt find. But today I will be talking about Vintage Nike Blue Tag T-Shirts

These shirts are mostly from the 1980s when Michael Jordan put Nike on the map. Of course the easiest way to recognize one these shirts is the color of the actual inside tag being blue. The most basic design is the word Nike written across the chest with the swoosh underneath.

So next time you are checking through the T-Shirt section keep an eye out for these. You can also search for these on eBay by checking vintage t-shirt lots. In your title search along with the keywords "vintage t-shirts" include the word "Nike" and check off the include description box to the right. You never know but someone may have put a blue tag shirt in their lot not know it's true value.

Savile Row Men's Suits & Blazers

I must admit the Men's suit section of the Thrift Store is a bit overwhelming. This is the area that I am least familiar with. I have never purchased a full suit and only a dozen or so blazers since I started thrifting. But I have made it a priority to step up my suit game for 2011. I will be sharing what you what I learn along the way.

One mark to look for on the inside label of a sports jacket is anything made on Savile Road. Savile Road is a street in London famous for it's men's bespoke tailoring. Bespoke meaning custom made to the buyer's specification. If you find a label and the item was made on Savile Row take a shot on it assuming that it is in good condition. I have seen used suits selling up to $750 on eBay. Remember Savile Row is just where the suit is made their are several tailors on Savile Row. Run a search on Savile Row Tailors if you want to become more familiar with the designer.

Happy New Year!!!

I'm back and looking forward to making 2011 the best eBay year ever. For my loyal followers I apologize for the lack of posts over the last few months of 2010. My wife and I just moved into our first home in October in a completely new area and I have pretty much been a Full-Time Stay at Home Dad while we have been settling in. Between taking care of our 7 month old boy all day and working on the house and my eBay Consignment Business www.ASAPsellsIT.com I have had little time left to thrift and write about my Thrift Store Finds. And I honestly did not want to post a bunch of junk or affiliate links just to have some content on my blog. So hopefully I still have some people checking in once in a while because I am going to try and get up a minimum 3 new posts a week in the new year.

A good way to start off the new year is by checking out one of my older posts from September 2010 about my Top 10 Thrift Store Tips. I needed to go over these again myself since I have not stepped foot in a Thrift Store for quite a while now. I really miss it, the thrill of finding something that you know will bring in a nice profit is a great feeling.

Thrift Store Find of the Month - September 2010

My first attempt at selling records was a good one. I had wrapped up my visit at the Thrift Store and as I was walking out the door, out of the corner of my eye I saw a Beatles Album. There were a bunch of them, so I took a shot at $1.00 each.


17 sold for $104.72

A nice little profit of $87.72 before fees.

I also purchased (2) Guns N' Roses Records for $1.00 each


They sold for $28.99 & $20.50 individually.

Some Tips:

• Ship records in the USA via USPS Media Mail.
• Invest in some boxes specifically made to ship records. They are a pain to ship if you don't have the right box size. This looks like a pretty good deal.

My Top 10 Thrift Store Shopping Tips

The final post of the day #5. Bad weather in NYC, my wife was stuck in traffic for over 3 hours and we have a 4 month old so I am just getting this post up in time.

Here is a list of my Top 10 Thrift Store Shopping Tips:

1. Download an eBay application to your cell phone. You will come across thousands of brands that you have never heard of and you will have a hunch that it will be a good seller. It's important to be able to check eBay completed items right on the spot to see if it is worth buying. Most thrift stores do not accept returns.
2. Check the kid’s section for adult clothing. I have found so many high end Women’s jeans in the kids section because they look so small. Also a good section to look for cycling jerseys and vintage t-shirts that may have shrunk over time. Plus it doesn’t hurt to find a pair of True Religion kid’s jeans.
3. Bring a tape measure with you. It is important to be able to measure jeans. Jeans with a longer inseam are more sought after. Unless it is really high end pair (example True Religion) try and stay with an inseam of 30” and over.
4. Check the items that you are interested in near a window before buying. If you look at the clothing in natural daylight you will have a better chance of seeing stains especially on dark color clothing.
5. Make yourself aware of half price days. This is a no brainer. Most thrift stores will offer a half price day or a half off that color tag for the day.
6. Ship clothing items in tear proof poly mailers. You will save on the weight if you use these instead of using a box. You can purchase them in bundles on eBay for around .12 each. It is a good investment.
7. If possible ship jeans domestically in priority flat rate envelopes. It will lessen the shipping costs for people who live on the opposite coast then you.
8. Visit websites like HonestForum.com to familiarize yourself with high end brands. You will definitely come across knockoff items. If you know what to look for you will limit the chances that you purchase a fake item. Also check out the reviews and guides section of eBay for advice.
9. Do not mix business with pleasure. If you are going to be serious about reselling thrift store items on eBay, do not start shopping for yourself while at the store. Set a goal and go for it.
10. Be Patient. You will have some down days, but trust me the longer you do this and the more you learn you will eventually be flying through the racks finding items that will bring you good money.

BONUS TIP

You might want to start a new eBay user id to sell your thrift store finds. Make it a clothing only store and you will get a good following if you offer unique items and offer great service. Offer incentives for repeat buyers like free shipping or a discount off their next purchase.

But I still found this great pair of maternity jeans for $4.99. Check out my post on designer maternity jeans for helpful hints on finding maternity jeans at thrift stores. Look for the same brands that bring in top dollar as regular high-end jeans. True Religion, Paige, Rock & Republic, etc. Avoid common labels like Motherhood Maternity, H&M Mama, Gap.
